Case Study: Maryland Department of Health & Mental Hygiene Laboratory Relocation
Location:
- Baltimore, MD

Project Overview:
Hoffberger Moving Systems (HMS) was selected to manage the multi-phase relocation of laboratories and staff for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (MDHMH). The project encompassed the transfer of both office and critical lab environments to a newly constructed, state-of-the-art facility.
Scope of Work:
- Packed office contents and IT equipment
- Full laboratory packing, including glassware, files, and lab supplies
- Research equipment: freezers, incubators, centrifuges, mass spectrometers, microscopes, and more
Execution & Strategy:
- Phased Execution: The move was completed across four distinct phases to minimize operational downtime.
- Complex Coordination: Equipment availability had to align with designated move windows, requiring precise planning and long working shifts across crew teams.
- Technical Challenges: Large research freezers could not fit upright in the origin elevators. Our experienced crews expertly navigated this by maneuvering the units safely and securely to the loading dock.
- Collaboration: HMS partnered with Triumvirate Environmental (chemical transfer) and North American Millwright (rigging services) to ensure a compliant and seamless relocation.
Outcome:
All phases were completed on or ahead of schedule and within budget. Due to our performance, HMS was awarded additional out-of-scope work following project completion. This successful relocation showcases our depth of experience handling highly specialized laboratory and healthcare moves.
