Case Study: John E. Howard Elementary School Relocation
Location & Timeline:
- Baltimore, MD
- December (executed during winter break to align with school calendar)
Project Overview:
Hoffberger Moving Services (HMS) was selected to manage the relocation of John E. Howard Elementary School from a temporary swing space at Westside Elementary School into its newly renovated facility on Linden Avenue.
The project involved relocating the contents and technology of approximately 72 classrooms, offices, storage areas, and the library/media center, all within a tight timeframe during winter break to ensure readiness for students and staff.
In addition, HMS coordinated a separate specialty move for the school’s Audiology Program located at another facility.
Scope of Work:
HMS delivered full-service relocation support, including:
- Packing of classrooms, library, storage rooms, and supply areas
- Relocation of classroom contents, furniture, and educational materials
- Handling and transport of computers and technology equipment
- Limited disconnect and reconnect of computer systems by trained technicians
- Delivery of approximately 850 packing boxes and materials
- Execution of a separate move for the Audiology Program (40 boxes)
- Post-move unpacking, cleanup, and final adjustments
The move also included specialized handling for early learning environments, including furniture and educational materials.
Execution & Strategy:
HMS implemented a tightly coordinated, multi-step plan to meet the compressed holiday schedule:
Pre-Move Preparation
- Early delivery of packing materials and supplies
- Three days of on-site packing at the swing school
- Coordination with Maryland Stadium Authority and school stakeholders
Relocation Execution
- Two-day move of all contents and computers
- Deployment of large-scale crews including:
- Project manager and multiple supervisors
- Up to 14 movers and 2 computer technicians
- Multiple trucks operating simultaneously
- Use of color-coded labeling systems to ensure accurate placement by room and department
Post-Move Support
- Dedicated post-move crew for fine-tuning, unpacking storage areas, and debris removal
- On-site supervision throughout all phases to ensure quality and adherence to schedule
This structured approach ensured all items were properly packed, tracked, relocated, and installed within a 5–6 day total project window.
Outcome:
- Completed full relocation of a 72-classroom elementary school within a limited holiday window
- Seamless transition from temporary swing space to newly renovated facility
- Accurate placement of contents using structured labeling and planning systems
- Successful integration of technology relocation and reconnection support
- Minimal disruption, enabling staff to quickly prepare for reopening
This project demonstrates HMS’s ability to execute time-sensitive school relocations tied to construction and academic calendars, combining detailed planning, scalable labor, and precision execution.
