Case Study: John Hopkins Medicine - CMSC North Tower Addition Phase 1

Time & Location:

  • Baltimore, MD
  • August – November 2024

Project Overview:

As part of the phased renovation and expansion of the Children’s Medical Surgical Center (CMSC) at Johns Hopkins Medicine, Hoffberger Moving Systems (HMS) was contracted to complete the first phase of the relocation into the newly constructed North Tower Addition.

Scope of Work:

  • Relocation of 13 wet laboratories
  • Move management for all associated faculty and staff offices
  • Coordination of logistics for specialized lab environments and sensitive materials

Execution & Strategy:

  • Phased, occupied renovation required close coordination with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine departments to avoid disruption to ongoing operations.
  • Tight timelines were further compressed during execution due to logistical efficiencies identified during pre-move walkthroughs and planning meetings.
  • Continuous communication between HMS, the client, and the construction management team ensured seamless alignment throughout the project.

Outcome:

The entire Phase 1 relocation was completed on time, with some phases accelerated due to proactive planning and on-site efficiencies. This project demonstrated HMS’s strength in healthcare and academic lab moves, particularly within active construction environments.
