Case Study: Loyola University - Donnelly Science Center

Time & Location:

  • Baltimore, MD
  • May 2024 – December 2025

Project Overview:

Loyola University required the phased relocation of teaching and research laboratories from the Donnelly Science Center to temporary campus locations and offsite storage. The project needed to be carefully staged to allow construction to begin while maintaining access to labs and classrooms. Sensitive items — including microscopes, incubators, freezers, and chemistry equipment — had to be relocated, stored securely for up to two years, and later returned without disruption.

Strategy & Scope of Work:

HMS developed a four-phase relocation plan:

    • Phases 1 & 2 (May 20–27, 2024): Packed and relocated designated labs to temporary classrooms; stored microscopes, glassware, and chemistry supplies offsite.
    • Phase 3 (June 3–7, 2024): Internal relocations of chemistry labs and refrigeration units.
    • Phase 4 (June 10–28, 2024): Largest phase, including freezers, biosafety cabinets, centrifuges, benchtop equipment, and over 300 boxes moved to offsite storage.
    • Storage & Return: Long term storage at HMS’s Linthicum facility, with all materials scheduled for return in November–December 2025.

Outcome:

  • Seamless relocation of multiple science labs and classrooms across campus.
  • Secure offsite storage of sensitive equipment and materials for up to two years.
  • Comprehensive return plan ensuring all labs and classrooms are restored post-renovation.
